Of family rituals and lobbies

January 1st is the day of the Marur family new year ritual that we've been following for years.
Every New Years morning we head out to the Army temple in the Cant areanear Golkonda followed by brunch at the Waterside Cafe in Taj Banjara.

Enter the hotel and you can here the faint sounds of different musicians playing in the background and my first introduction to a man whose emotions were converted into tones and out came the most beautiful tunes threw his saxophone.Whether the elevator, the powder room or even the lobby, his music which at first seemed to be oh so boring for the teen me, is much appreciated today.

But that still doesn't quite answer my question about why such mellow music for a lobby? I mean, imagine if you had a meeting at the lobby or even at the cafe and this music was playing... I don't know about you but I wouldn't be able to stop yawning throughout the meeting. (heh!)

Cover or originals, his music stirs up some of the cutest memories I've had at the brunches over the years. Here is Kenny G for you.

Memories with the family: Dad

What I love about music is the fact that it can trigger any memory in you. Whether you have buried that memory 6 feet below or is a fresh one... On that note, a memory that often pops up in my head is of my father driving me to school and us singing at the top of our lungs, Brown girl in the ring!

This week's song is dedicated to my father, Vijay Marur, for the days he drove me to school and taught me to fall in love with bike ride, the wind blowing in my hair and most importantly, singing and enjoying myself.

The year I was born

1988.

The Marurs became parents for the second time, while making their first born an elder sister. The year I was born, was the year of some pretty sensational music. (And no, I'm not saying it with a bias to the year. heh!)

1988.

Some of my favourite numbers were released, and quite honestly I hadn't even known they were. until I actually looked it up. So what was released the year of 1988? Well, for starters Sweet Child O Mine by Guns n Roses, The Flame by Cheap Trick, Faith by George Micheal, Pour Some Sugar on Me by Def Leopard,  Dirty Diana by Micheal Jackson, Red Red Wine by UB40, Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, Never Tear us Apart by INXS, and a whole bunch of other hits.

The Soundtrack to life

I often wonder if my life ever needed a soundtrack what would it be like. Would it be categorized according to my moods or would it be according to the situations life puts me in? I'm not entirely sure and that's probably why I started this blog... to find songs that might do the trick. On one press of the play button, I'd know that this is meant to be in that playlist.

Join me in exploring music that suits your taste and if you think i might like. Who knows, maybe you might just find the soundtrack to your life too! :)
